Belle Vernon is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,091 at the 2010 census. Belle Vernon was originally named Summerset, and under the latter name was platted in 1854. The present name is a transfer from Bellevernon Township, named for Margaret Eberhart, who built a large brick mansion in the area. Belle Vernon is located at 40°10′39″N 79°52′27″W (40.177500, -79.874167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,073 people, 1,661 households, and 1,084 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,695.4 people per square mile (1,429.6/km2). There were 1,718 housing units at an average density of 1,547.9 per square mile (598.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.51% White, 1.82% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.52% of the population.
