Two U.S. Presidents have lived in Greeneville. Andrew Johnson (17th President) was born and grew up in Greeneville. He was elected as Mayor of Greeneville in 1834, and then to the United States House of Representatives in 1843.
Former President James K. Polk was also from Tennessee. After his college education, he moved to Maury County, Tennessee, where he practiced law. Later, he relocated to Columbia, Tennessee, for eleven years. Then, in 1839, Polk moved to Greeneville, where he practiced law until 1841.
